BVHP Mission Image

Thirty youth from the Bayview-Hunters Point “Don’t Break, Create” Project will gather at the Bayview Opera House on April 18th, 2020 to perform a showcase on Youth Rights. They will use multiple art forms (music, spoken word, dance, social media campaigns, posters, plays) to express their stories, feelings, and perspectives on what youth need to thrive and survive. They will cover topics including housing rights, LGBTQ rights, undocumented rights, and Black Lives Matter.

We are seeking Bay Area residents to host Zeeni Apprenticeships in February, March, and early April 2020 to prepare youth for their showcase. If you are passionate about a personal or professional craft and think your expertise could help develop competencies and confidence in communication, performance, artistic expression, or self-care, we’d love to hear from you!

What counts as a craft?

Anything that you love to do and can do well. For this specific mission we are interested in experiences that will help youth discover and express their voices.

Who makes a good Zeeni Apprenticeship host?

Successful hosts have 2 traits in common:

  1. They are proud of their craft and “nerd out” over it.

  2. They care about making youth feel heard and understood. They remember how hard adolescence is.

Prior experience with youth and teaching are helpful, but being a good host is not about being perfect. Apprenticeships are more like hands-on conversations than lectures.

Who are the youth I will be working with?

For the Bayview-Hunters Point Mission, you will be working with 16-24 year olds from Bayview Hunters-Point who are attending youth leadership programs.

What exactly am I committing to?

You are committing to planning and providing one apprenticeship experience for a group of youth. If you find the experience enjoyable, we encourage you to host again.

We do not expect or ask hosts to provide additional support to participants outside of the apprenticeship.

Do I have to host by myself?

No. We encourage pairs and even groups of adults to work together as hosts. If there are multiple hosts, we request one person be the lead coordinator.

Zeeni also provides youth facilitators who assist with community building and engagement during your apprenticeship.

Do all apprenticeships have to take place in Bayview-Hunters Point?

No. We prefer that you enable youth to experience spaces they’ve never explored before. Our only criteria is that the setting be relevant to the craft being taught.

Does this cost anything?

Zeeni Apprenticeships are free for youth. We ask hosts to be resourceful in sourcing materials for their apprenticeship. If needed, we are able to reimburse some material costs.
